Always challenging: Wireless networks at POI
No matter which technology or vendor: Wireless networks in "points-of-interests" (POI) like soccer arenas, fair halls, in production plants, or at leisure parks are always a challenge. Often they miss to fulfill customers' expectation on reliability and availability based on their experiences in "normal" - less challenging - environments.
Careful RF planning and optimization with a particular focus on the requirements of strongly capacity limited networks is a must in providing a sufficient solution for any POI. Rarely an optimization solution for a POI is straight forward, in fact it needs a deep understandig of the actual network situation and traffic demands.
Planning of WiFi-networks
WiFi networks for special locations with highest traffic demands are feasible. However they need the selection of suitable hardware and a dedicated service concept. Access points have to be "carrier-grade" and should be especially equipped for running in dense environments.
Providing wireless IP-networks for plants and company venues have to support highest security standards - as well on data transmision as on casing, cabling, and mounting.
A huge flexibility is possible in implementing WiFi-based networks. Metrozone, Multi-SSID, Low-Latency profiles, Multiband-Mimo, distributed antennas are just a few of them. A good network is easy to extend and to manage but it has to be as well adapted to the actual traffic and service demands.
Optimization of UMTS & LTE
To provide public mobile radio networks for POIs mobile operators and venue operators have to find best suitable compromises on coverage and capacity. Often distributed antenna systems are used supporting many operators at once which is limiting the options for pure RF optimization. To improve network performances therefore it needs a deep understanding of system parameters.
While small cells promise to deliver an efficient and high-capacity approach in future using indoor repeater already can overcome many local network issues. A floor-by-floor planning incl. measurements and simulations helps to maximize coverage and capacity.
Although the radio interface is often the bottleneck in a venues' network, the best improvements can be achieved by changing the service scope offered on top of the air interface. Providing fast and reliable most relevant information to customers does cleaning the network from a lot of frustrating and non effective search traffic. Implementing efficient filtering technics which minimize (typically app-based) background traffic inproves the customer perception without touching the air interface. There are a lot of approaches possible which must not forgotten when planning and optimizing a capacity limited network.
"BYOD" (bring-your-own-device - meaning using users personally owned devices) becoming more important or are even the only possible option for many WiFi deployments like in our Connected Crowd projects. This minimizes the chances to improve network performances by steering the clients - another challenge for optimization. Changing requirements due to new internet services and devices needs a feasible network monitoring and easy options to adjust the networks to the latest developments.
